Thank you for your interest in Minnesota State Mankato’s
Master of Science in Communication and Composition!

Our unique online master’s program creates new career opportunities by connecting the complementary disciplines of composition and communication. This program prepares graduates to teach both subjects effectively and to pursue advanced degrees in either field as well. The multi-disciplinary program is designed for individuals with an interest in teaching both communication (public speaking, interpersonal, small group, forensics) AND composition at community colleges and technical colleges. Smaller CC and TC need faculty who can teach across more than one discipline. This program is designed to facilitate such a need with two disciplines common to almost all CC and TC programs--Communication Studies and English. This degree opens the door for careers in either discipline—including marketing, non-profits, journalism, editing, community college instruction and more. Our program also prepares students to pursue a Ph.D. in Communication or a Ph.D. in English. It builds your credentials for the range of teaching positions you may be pursuing. Completing a certificate can:

  • Qualify you for lane changes in a middle or high school setting
  • Give you an edge in the two-year college teaching market
  • Increase your competitiveness for positions as full-time lecturers and writing center directors
  • Broaden your curriculum vitae for PhD program teaching assistantships
  • Strengthen your qualifications for teaching abroad opportunities

Skill sets for the program include:

  • Analytical Skills
  • Audience Awareness
  • Writing
