Dr. Gwen Westerman is Professor in English and Humanities at MSU. She has served as the Director of the Native American Literature Symposium, an independent national conference, since 2001. She received a BA and MA in English from Oklahoma State University, and a PhD in English from the University of Kansas, where her dissertation focused on classical rhetoric and the design of computer-human interaction. Dr. Westerman is co-author of Mni Sota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota, which won a 2013 Minnesota Book Award, a 2013 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History, and the 2014 Hognander Minnesota History Award, which recognizes the most outstanding scholarly work related to Minnesota history published during the preceding two years. She is also the author of a collection of poetry in Dakota and English, Follow the Blackbirds. A national award-winning visual artist, Dr. Westerman has art work in the permanent collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, the University Art Galleries at the University of South Dakota, and the Red Cloud Heritage Center on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
