Christopher Merkner is a writer and teacher, and he likes to say that he’s been studying the particularities of American Midwestern living for about forty years. He grew up in Illinois, spent his summers in northern Wisconsin, and he earned his undergraduate degree at St Olaf College in Northfield, MN. His first book, The Rise & Fall of the Scandamerican Domestic: Stories, has just come out from Coffee House Press, and he characterizes the book as a satire, an exploration of the relationships between place and language, and a playful study of the form of the twenty-first century short story. Merkner earned his MFA at the University of Florida and PhD at the University of Denver. He is currently the co-director of the creative writing program at West Chester University. He and his wife and children live just outside of Philadelphia.
