Young adult novelist Margie Gelbwasser has always been drawn to dark tales. She tells me later in this interview, she "doesn't do happy." If this is a rule, her second novel for teens, Pieces of Us, is no exception. The four teen characters struggle with cyber bullying, blackmail, and repeated sexual abuse--serious issues that have serious consequences. Issues that some may find difficult to read, and certain authors may even find difficult to write honestly. Make no mistake, though. Some things are worth searching for in darkness. Margie tells me how important it is to do justice to these real world issues, and to provide some recognition for the struggles many teens face today. Don't miss this one.
