The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) prepares students for employment in language teaching, program administration, and curriculum and assessment development in the US and abroad, as well as for doctoral study. The program is designed for international and domestic students with interests in a variety of language teaching contexts and research areas. Program requirements include completion of 33-35 credits and a capstone project (thesis or non-thesis option). Additionally, all students must meet a language requirement (i.e., two consecutive years of college-level foreign language study or an equivalent for domestic students and a minimum TOEFL score of 80 (iBT) or IELTS 6.5 for international students).
The graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has two tracks. One track prepares students, who are previously licensed K-12 teachers, to work specifically with English learners in the K-12 environment. The second track prepares students for careers in teaching English learners in international contexts, government and non-government organizations, and private enterprises. Additionally, this track will prepare students who teach in higher education settings in the U.S. In that context, it can be added to other Master's degrees to make candidates eligible to teach second language classes. Program requirements include completion of 18-24 credits. Additionally, all students must meet a language requirement (i.e., two consecutive semesters of college level foreign language study or an equivalent for domestic students and a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT or IELTS 6.5 for international students).
