Larissa Pepinsmith
TESL Undergraduate Student

My name is Larissa Pepinsmith, I'm from Minneapolis, and am an undergrad here at MSU, Mankato. I just completed the coursework for TESL k-12 licensure this past spring semester. After the classes and experiences with English Language Learners (ELLs), I am very excited to become a teacher. The TESL program has exposed me to a variety of theories, methods, and strategies for working with ELLs. Two of my favorite parts of the program were the opportunities to practice with peer teaching and the time required for field experience. I appreciate both how the professors in this department care about their students' deep learning of the material and the amount of life experience they bring into the classroom.

Hiroko Moaveni
TESL MA Student

I am originally from Tokyo, Japan and currently living in Mankato, MN with my husband. Since I started the M.A. TESL program in the summer of 2013, I have enjoyed an exciting learning experience with a wonderful circle of professors and classmates.

The TESL program at MNSU offers an excellent balance of linguistic study, theories of second language teaching, pedagogical methods, and practical experiences. It was fascinating for me to gain knowledge of how we learn a second language from different perspectives and then observe myself as a nonnative speaker of English and other English learners. At the same time, I appreciated the valuable opportunities to practice how to apply the knowledge. Activities such as designing lessons and assessments, a clinical experience in an ESL class and tutoring were beneficial to build a solid foundation for my future career. Having classmates from all over the world, I have also enjoyed developing cross-cultural understanding.

I am grateful for many benefits that I have received from the TESL program at MNSU.
