Master of Arts in English: Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

The Master of Arts, in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), at Minnesota State University, Mankato is designed for both native and non-native speakers of English. The degree prepares candidates for employment in teaching, program administration, curriculum consulting, and materials development. Candidates for this degree take coursework in the theory and practice of teaching English as a second language, linguistics, the English language, and cultural studies. Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)

The graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language prepares candidates for careers in teaching English as a second or foreign language to adult learners in U.S. and international contexts, including two- and four-year institutions, government and non-government organizations, and private enterprises. Coursework develops candidates' knowledge of how language operates with primary emphasis on the English language and the skills required to teach it effectively to adult language learners. Licensure for Teaching English as a Second Language (K-12)

The English as a Second Language licensure program prepares students to teach English as a second language to K-12 students in U.S. Public schools. An ESL license can be combined with any other licensure field. Teachers with double licensure are well positioned to serve Minnesota’s diverse population in a variety of classroom arrangements or as curriculum specialists. Popular licensure combinations in the past have included Spanish + ESL, English Ed + ESL, and Elementary Education + ESL. Other combinations such as Math + ESL and Social Studies + ESL are becoming increasingly necessary to meet the needs of Minnesota’s diverse student population. This option is available fully online.
