When is the application deadline for prospective students?

New applications are processed throughout the year. You can apply for the certificate program any time. You will hear back on the status of your application 2-4 weeks from the date that your application is complete.

When do classes begin?

Certificate program classes follow the standard academic calendar for the university, with fall classes beginning in mid-August and spring classes beginning in early January.

How many courses should I enroll in each semester?

Generally, certificate students enroll in 1-2 courses each semester. Classes may be taken in any order; students do not need to complete their required courses before they enroll in elective courses.

What should I submit for a writing sample?

An academic or professional writing sample is required. This writing might be informative, persuasive or analytical in nature, written for an undergraduate course or workplace assignment.

Do I need to take the GRE to apply for the certificate program?

No. GRE scores are not required for admission to the program.

How much does each course cost?

Are teaching assistantships available?

A limited number of teaching assistantships are awarded each spring to individuals who have the capability to be on campus to fulfill their teaching assignments. Information about teaching assistantships is located on the Composition Program website.

I am currently enrolled in a graduate program in the Minnesota State University, Mankato English department. Can I pursue the teaching certificate alongside this degree?

Yes. Individuals who have already been admitted to a Master’s program in English and are working toward the degree should submit a 5-10 page academic or professional writing sample and a personal statement describing relevant experience and professional goals to the English department graduate chair, Dr. Nancy Drescher, at nancy.drescher@mnsu.edu.

I am an international student.  What is the minimum TOEFL score required for admission?

International applicants must submit a TOEFL score of 550 or an Internet-based TOEFL score of 79.

How do I get a MavCard as an off-campus student?

You can obtain an extended learning MavCard by going to this website and filling out the form.
