Research Assistantship Announcements

Vacancy notices for all graduate assistantships are provided on the Human Resources website. The Department of English offers teaching assistantships (broken link) and some graduate assistantships. The majority of the assistantships are awarded to students studying in residence (i.e., to students studying on campus); however, some assistantships are available to 100% online learners.

Research Assistant—Film Studies (broken link)

Date of Appointment:
Fall Semester 2013

Salary:
Up to $9000 plus tuition stipends, dependent upon availability of funds, period of appointment and assignment. Appointments made after the tenth day of classes are not eligible for tuition waiver.

Responsibilities:
To assist in the implementation of pedagogical improvements in Introduction to Film (ENG 114) and to support faculty with additional curricular innovations that will permit an expanded emphasis on film studies in the department. The student will assist faculty in planning instruction, in teaching large lecture classes, in grading, and in creating online instructional materials. Contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding, there is a possibility that this appointment may be continued beyond the initial period of employment. Graduate assistants are required to enroll for a minimum of 6 credits per semester at the graduate level..

Qualifications:
 

  • Bachelor's Degree in English or related field with strong concentration of coursework in English.
  • Admission to the Graduate English Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
  • Strong interest in teaching.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with undergraduate students and faculty.
  • Strong communication skills in writing and speaking.
  • Experience with computer-assisted research and writing.

Other Considerations:
 

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Experience or interest in using instructional technology, including course management systems.
  • Experience in film production or screenplay.

Research Assistant—Multicultural Literature (broken link)

Responsibilities:
Assist English Department faculty and teaching staff in researching and developing the rationale and materials for a series of courses called “Teaching Multicultural American Literatures,” and to support the organizational activities of the national Native American Literature Symposium. This student will report to faculty members who are teaching classes in multi-cultural literature and will assist those faculty members in research and acquisition of print and electronic materials to support class delivery in the classroom and/or online. This student will have online and hardcopy publication responsibilities and will also assist the director of the Native American Literature Symposium with all aspects of conference planning and administration activities including budgeting, facilities, program development, website maintenance, and correspondence. Contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding, there is a possibility that this appointment may be continued beyond the initial period of employment. Graduate assistants are required to enroll for a minimum of 6 credits per semester at the graduate level.

Research Assistant—Professional Publications

Responsibilities:
To assist English Department faculty in research, editing and publishing duties related to the publication of departmental publications, including Techniques (produced by students in the Technical Communication Program). Tasks would include soliciting contributions, selecting and editing reviews, formatting the journals for online publication, and seeing to publication and distribution. In addition, this assistant would investigate the development of a campus-based press that would publish works related to the Creative Writing program and for multi-cultural studies in literature and film. Contingent on satisfactory performance and available funding, there is a possibility that this appointment may be continued beyond the initial period of employment. Graduate assistants are required to enroll for a minimum of 6 credits per semester at the graduate level.
