Youel English Award II

Award Description

The award will be given to a graduating English major or minor preparing for a career outside of teaching or writing, and who will not pursue graduate work in English language or literature. The Youel English Award II is restricted to those planning to enter a non-teaching profession outside the field of English language/literature. For example, English majors or minors planning to enter law school, medical school, graduate school outside the English field, or business-related careers are eligible to apply. The Youel English Award II will be made upon graduation. The 2009 award amount has yet to be determined.

Eligibility

To qualify for consideration, a candidate must

  • be a graduating senior at MSU in either Spring 2009, Summer 2009, or Fall 2009
  • be enrolled as an English major or minor
  • demonstrate how he/she has combined an English major or minor with career preparation in another field
  • demonstrate a high standard of personal, social and academic achievement, and an understanding of how his or her undergraduate preparation will contribute to the candidate's career aspirations 

Application Procedure

To apply, a candidate must

  • complete the English Awards cover sheet, including the names and contact information for two references who can address the student's academic, personal, and social qualities
  • complete an application letter of no more than two pages. In the letter, the candidate must discuss (a) his/her academic and extracurricular achievements and (b) how his/her English course selections relate to his/her career aspirations.

Applicants may apply for all English awards for which they qualify. For students who apply for multiple awards, the Awards Committee will confer the highest-amount award that a student may be eligible to receive.

The award recipient will be announced in April 2009.
