Youel English Award I

Award Description

The award will be given to a graduating English major preparing for a career teaching or writing, or who will pursue graduate work in English language or literature. The Youel English Award I recognizes personal, social and academic achievements, and an awareness of how the student's English major fits into his or her career aspirations. The Youel English Award I will be made upon graduation. The 2008 award amount has yet to be determined; the 2007 award amount was $300.

Eligibility

To qualify for consideration, a candidate must

• be a graduating senior at MSU in either Spring 2008, Summer 2008, or Fall 2008
• be enrolled as an English major
• demonstrate a high standard of personal, social and academic achievement, and an understanding of how his or her undergraduate preparation will contribute to the candidate's graduate study or other career plans in English language/literature

Application Procedure

To apply, a candidate must

• complete the English Awards cover sheet, including the names and contact information for two references who can address the student's academic, personal and social qualities
• complete an application letter of no more than two pages. In the letter, the candidate must discuss (a) his/her academic and extracurricular achievements and (b) how his/her English course selections relate to his/her career aspirations.

Applicants may apply for all English awards for which they qualify. For students who apply for multiple awards, the Awards Committee will confer the highest-amount award that a student may be eligible to receive.

Award recipients will be announced April 4, 2008.
