Brian Sether Memorial Scholarship

Application deadline: 4:30 pm Friday, March 20, 2009

Award Description

The Brian Sether Memorial Scholarship will be given to a faculty-nominated English, Speech, or Open Studies major with interdisciplinary and community interests who demonstrates financial need. The 2009 award amount is $200.

Eligibility

To qualify for consideration, a candidate must

  • be a junior or senior majoring in English, Speech or Open Studies
  • demonstrate interdisciplinary and community interests
  • demonstrate financial need

Application Procedure

To apply, a candidate must

  • be nominated by any MSU faculty member by a written letter of support. The letter should address how the candidate embodies the qualities remembered best about Brian Sether. Brian's performance in class demonstrated his passion for literature. He was a risk-taker. This was obvious by the way he lived and by the way he expressed his thoughts in discussion and in creative and analytical writing. He challenged himself and those around him to think. He had a natural aptitude for writing and is remembered for his poetry. Like so many students, Brian was always struggling and worked a variety of jobs to get by financially. But perhaps most compelling were Brian's gentleness, his intelligence, and his sense of humor.
  • complete the English Awards cover sheet, including the names and contact information for two references
  • complete an application letter of no more than two pages. In the letter, the candidate must discuss (a) his/her interdisciplinary and community interests and (b) provide a statement of his/her aspirations and how the award would facilitate reaching them.
  • provide an unofficial transcript
