Fall 2017 Awards

The deadline for the awards below is Friday, Nov. 4, 2017 by 4:30 p.m.

Eddice Barber

The award will be given to an undergraduate English Education major who will student-teach during the upcoming Spring term. The Fall 2017 award amount is $800. To qualify for consideration, a candidate must be a junior or senior, majoring in English Education, who will student teach during the upcoming Spring or Fall terms and have earned a GPA of at least 3.66 in English courses for the major.

To apply, the candidate must submit a letter of no more than two pages and an unofficial transcript. In the letter, the candidate must discuss (a) his/her academic and extracurricular accomplishments and other relevant qualifications and (b) provide a statement of purpose detailing his/her career aspirations and how the award would facilitate reaching them. The candidate also should include in the letter the name of the award for which they are applying, their name, home address, e-mail address, tech id, and contact information for two references who can address the student's academic qualities.

Marcia Thompson

The award will be given to an accomplished student pursuing a career in English Education. It is intended to recognize the student's commitment to teaching and current accomplishments (e.g. academic, educational, volunteer service) while assisting the student in completing his or her studies in a timely and cost-effective manner. The Fall 2017 award amount is $500. To qualify for consideration, a candidate must be majoring in English education and have earned a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

To apply, the candidate must submit an unofficial transcript and a letter of application of no more than two pages. In the letter, the candidate must discuss (a) his/her academic and extracurricular achievements and (b) his/her career aspirations and how the award would facilitate reaching them. The candidate also should include in the letter the name of the award for which they are applying, their name, home address, e-mail address, tech id, and contact information for two references who can address the student's academic qualities.

Unless otherwise indicated on the links above, a candidate should follow the submission instructions below. There is no application cover form. Students should indicate clearly somewhere in their application materials which award they are applying for.

Applicants may apply for all English awards for which they qualify. For students who apply for multiple awards, the Awards Committee will confer the highest-amount award that a student may be eligible to receive.
